Protein Potent Oatmeal

So here’s the deal with oatmeal… it can be very, very healthy, or it can be very, very unhealthy (usually due to added sugars). Starting with the type of oatmeal you purchase, you can manipulate the nutrients to suit what you want out of your breakfast and pack a ton of protein in, and that’s what this very filling breakfast does.

I like to purchase Nature’s Path Original Oatmeal, which can be found at Publix, Sprouts, and Kroger. However, this brand is very popular now so I would not be surprised if it’s in Walmart and Target. The only ingredient is rolled oats, and one package has 8 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber, which is excellent. But the protein party doesn’t stop there! By stirring in 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (I use Smart Balance), you add another 7 grams of protein. That’s 15 grams of protein in a bowl of oatmeal! Depending on your choice of granola or seed (hemp, chia, and flax all have high protein content), this can easily be 20+ grams of protein at breakfast time. That’s more protein than two boiled eggs! Plus, you get the perks of no cholesterol and plenty of fiber.

To prepare, I just follow the directions on the package and add my toppings. This tasted great with strawberries, but peaches, apples, bananas, and pears complement this breakfast as well, providing sweetness without added sugars.
